On a moonlit night in the summer of 1917 in a rural southwest Georgia town, a twelve-year-old Negro boy hears the senator’s wife cry for help. He fights her attacker and saves her life. From that point forward he enjoys limitless favors from the couple. Soon he is a harmonica-playing, juke-jointing, moonshining gambler, whose hot temper gets him into one fight after another. According to one prominent person in his life, he is on an unalterable course to the grave. He tunes out all the unsolicited advice he receives about dropping his bad habits. That is until the cold winds of trying circumstances and perplexing events force him to make some difficult decisions. At the crossroads of his introspection, he meets a young lady who helps him change the course of his life. He finally responds to the calling he has long ignored. When his brother is murdered by the Klan, the community holds its breath in anticipation of his seeking revenge. His restraint shocks everyone. His own visit from the night riders comes a short time later. The story of how he survived is truly remarkable. A former professional football player, Al played five seasons in the NFL. He and his wife live in the Orlando area near their three adult children. As a grade schooler Al spent summer breaks on his grandparents’ farm in Georgia. He cherishes his experiences of country life, which inspired him to write this book. Publisher’s website http//sbprabooks.com/AlLatimer

The Irregular Ordination of Preacher Jim Al Latimer Books

Al Latimer captures the complexities of the relationships between white and black people living together in small Georgia communities during the turn-of-the-Twentieth Century within a page turning narrative that envelops the reader in the lives of the true-to-life characters of his novel. Through The Irregular Ordination of Preacher Jim, he deftly walks the reader through some of the worst parts of Southern history wrapped in a story of God's love and grace, heroism, triumph and defeat, hatred, love, family bonds, friendship, loyalty, perseverance and redemption. I read this book in one sitting. Not because it is simple but because it is that good.

The Irregular Ordination of Preacher Jim Al Latimer Books Reviews

Thought provoking. Engaging. A compelling read by Al. A man I've know since 1975. Eye opening experiences on black and white relations in the 20s.
An easy and enjoyable read. Fortunately and unfortunately it took me back to a time that reminded me of when I grew up. I could easily have been Jim. Well worth the time to read.
It's a tremendous, gripping read -- a must for lovers of historical fiction. Does a wonderful job of staying true to the early 20th century South while weaving a rich tapestry of shocking plot twists and turns. Can’t wait for the next Latimer hit!
This book is timely and insightful. It reveals a strained symbiosis enforced by culture which evolved into the civil rights movement and our country’s current quest for a post racial America. As Ta-Nehisi Coates called it “The Beautiful Struggle”.
Al Latimer did an excellent job explaining the events and times that were taking place in the south during that time. I can relate to this book because I grew up in Alabama and experience and saw some of the same racial crimes that were taking place in Georgia. This book is captivating and suspenseful, it was very difficult to put down. I look forward to Al Latimer's next book (hurry).
This book is a compelling work of historical fiction touching on the sensitive topics of race and religion in the old south in the early 1920s. I found it to be historically accurate and we'll researched. The storyline, because it is based on historical realities is predictable to a certain extent, but the author adds twists that keep the reader guessing. A great book to take a journey back in time, in a style that paints pictures with words.
While the beginning of the book starts out a little slow, about a quarter into it, I became attached to the characters and was drawn in. Yes the story touches the subjects of race and racism, but in my opinion, it is really a story about love, family, strength, faith and a man's journey to God. The book is well written and it deals with the realities of what went on in the South during the era in which it was written. Definitely a must read and looking forward to a sequel that provides answers to questions I had once I finished it.
