When a man marries Mary Roberts Rinehart Books
Mary Roberts Rhinehart is something of a puzzle. She seems to have experimented with several different styles and it is hard to categorize her. Uneven but interesting would sum it up best. When a Man Marries is similar in theme to some of the sillier books of the 1920's, featuring young people with too much money, too little sense and no occupation. I finished it, but I would not recommend it to someone who is not already a Rhinehart fan. Begin reading her work with The Circular Staircase, it is one of her best and combines suspense with humor quite effectively. She also has some interesting novels featuring a nurse that I remember as quite readable.Product details

When a man marries Mary Roberts Rinehart Books Reviews
If your into the older time stories with mystery and I suppose romance then you might want to check out this book. And it cant really hurt since it is free after all. This story is about a hand full of rich people stuck in a house because of some type of illness. And the only way to keep it from spreading is to lock the people who have come in contact with it in the house. While they are locked in there things get stolen, people get blamed, well only one person gets blamed and that's the main character. The lock in all started because the main character wanted to lift the spirit of one of her friends. At the party the friends relative that give him the money is coming over. No big deal except the relative doesn't know that the guy is not married anymore. The main character gets tricked into playing the role of the wife, to only find out that first off the relative is a horrible old lady and secondly, the mans really which shows up. It seems just a few minutes after the really wife shows up everyone at the party except for the help gets locked in the house. So everyone has to keep the lies up so the old lady doesn't find out that everything is a lie, but also the main character has to lie to a love interest she has at the house too. Because he like the old lady, thinks that the main character is married. This book has unique twists and turn in the story that it might be hard to put it down. If my some what explanation makes any sense, and the story does sound kind of interesting, then you will love reading this book, because it is a lot better then what I can explain because I'm horrible at telling stories or explaining.
At first this seemed like a simple comedy of errors, then a mystery developed to double the fun. Great read!
If you like Jeeves and Wooster or Mapp and Lucia, then you will like this story. A divorced wife sneaks into a house to try to woo the butler away from her ex-husband. In the meantime, the aunt of the husband descends for a visit and the husband enlists the aid of a female friend to play his wife because the husband never told his aunt he was divorced for fear she would cut off his money. The butler falls ill with small pocks during a dinner party and all of the servants run away before the house is sealed under quarantine. Being part of the NY 400, none of the guests know how to take care of themselves. Polite mayhem ensues.
This is my favorite MRR. It was like watching an old black and white movie. It was old fashion classic comedy with a bit of mystery.
I do understand why earlier reviewers here liked this book. But I must confess that the artificiality of the main characters -- they are rich, idle, silly, useless nincompoops -- turned me off. I had heard of Mary Roberts Rinehart all my life and recalled my mother reading her later novels. But I had never read anything by her, even though I knew she was a pioneer American mystery writer. It was the setting of this novel that irritated me and maybe I'll give Rinehart a try again in the future. And I will admit that this locked-room mystery (or, rather, locked-house [because of a smallpox quarantine]) is fairly neatly plotted. Hence three stars rather than the one-star I would have given it if it hadn't been for the plot.
When she agreed to help a friend deceive his maiden aunt by posing as his wife, Kit never guessed the trouble that would follow. Quarantined along with a group of society's elite, including her friend's aunt and his former wife, due to exposure to smallpox, Kit soon finds herself in the midst of a series of crazy events including several burglaries, bungled escape attempts and a slew of mysterious occurrences...with a little romantic confusion, too! Who is stealing from the household? The same man she suspects of kissing her on the stairwell or someone else? Events gradually grow more and more strange and the solution more murky until the final chapters of the book when all is revealed and Kit determines whether or not the man who both attracts and repels her so much is worth her heart.
Filled with Rinehart's trademark suspense and action, this book may not be one of her best but it is still a satisfactory, entertaining read.
A group of society elite are quarantined because of smallpox without the benefit any of the servants who manage to escape before the others are shut up in the millionaire's mansion. The rambling story is told by Kit, one of the rich young ladies. It involves strange happenings, mixed emotions and some comedy. This is not Mary Roberts Rinehart's usual mystery, in fact, there is only a limited mystery. It is a fun light read telling of the helplessness of the super rich to fend for themselves. If you like her other stories this is an interesting diversion. If you are hoping for an intriguing mystery you might be disappointed.
